Winners in focus: Wembley Stadium’s Crowd Safety Team

Wembley CST review 2

One of 18 awards presented at 2011 Gala Awards Evening, held at FC Barcelona’s stunning Camp Nou stadium this past June, TheStadiumBusiness Awards’ Safety and Security Award recognises “the continued effort of a venue or organisation to ensure the safety, comfort and security of sports venue patrons.”

And, after welcoming over 7 million people through the doors of the iconic North London venue since its opening in 2007, the TheStadiumBusiness Awards Safety and Security Award for 2011 was presented to Wembley Stadium’s Crowd Safety Team (CST).

Our 2011 Awards judging panel commended Wembley ‘for delivering world-class stadium safety and security on a massive scale, providing an effective and efficient way of managing risk and legal obligations, and for being the stable backcloth for a great customer day out at local and global events’.

Wembley Stadium’s Senior Operations Manager Peter Swordy was on hand in Barcelona to collect the accolade (pictured above left).

And, after seeing Peter return with the Awards trophy, Wembley’s Nick Woodhouse (pictured with Peter, above centre), Event Day Safety Officer and Head of Health & Safety Compliance at the stadium, spoke of his elation at receiving the award: “We are delighted that the achievements of Wembley Stadium’s Crowd Safety Team have been recognised by our peers in the industry – international stadium and sports professionals, operators and promoters.”

Comprising a mixture of 1,600 in-house and external safety and security staff, the CST are charged with looking after the safety and comfort of 90,000 spectators and 5,000 other stadium staff, on event days. So just how does Nick’s team go about this seemingly massive task?

“We always aim to get better and improve on what we do through developing great stakeholder relationships, long range planning, detailed briefings, continuous learning, feedback and quality assessment,” offered Nick. “We contract with good staff providers who are directed to deliver to a high standard. We invest a great deal of time, effort and resources in our in house Crowd Safety Managers and they repay our trust with high standards of resilience, dedication and professionalism.”

To further celebrate the achievement and recognise the contribution of the entire team, the venue commissioned special pin badges (pictured above right) to be made; now sported with pride on the lapels of the Crowd Safety Team’s uniforms!

“The lapel badges are a fantastic way to recognise the Award, so we’re delighted that Wembley have decided to commemorate the achievement in this way,” said Ian Nuttall, founder and chair of the Awards.

“Congratulations, once again, to Peter, Nick and the entire Wembley Stadium Crowd Safety Team, and indeed to all of 2011 shortlisted nominees and prize winners. And we look forward to once again celebrating leadership, innovation and achievement in our industry with our 2012 Awards!”
