Winners in focus: Hopkins Architects, for the London 2012 Velodrome
Friday, December 16, 2011

TheStadiumBusiness Awards’ Architecture & Design Award is a prestigious accolade, awarded to an architecture or design practice for a completed project that has “delivered on both ‘form and function’ to inspire the future direction of stadium, arena or major sports venue design.” For their work on the London 2012 Velodrome, Hopkins Architects were judged to be the outstanding winner of the 2011 Award…
One of the four permanent venues on the Olympic Park, the Velodrome (which provides a venue for the indoor track cycling events at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games) was designed by Hopkins Architects, and delivered in collaboration with Expedition Engineering, BDSP and Grant Associates. Work started on site on 23rd February 2009 and was completed ahead of programme and on budget on 13th January 2011.
The venue’s distinctive form emerged from an integrated design team approach which focused on the performance and efficiency of every aspect of the building; inspired by the creativity and engineering rigour that goes into the design and manufacture of the bicycles it will house. Containing 6,000 seats in both Olympic and Legacy modes, the Velodrome responds to both contexts in an appropriate manner with minimal transformation.
Commended by the 2011 judging panel for being an incredibly low mass, low carbon solution that exceeds the Olympic Delivery Authority’s sustainability and material targets, the project certainly delivers on both ‘form and function’ and as such, was a worthy recipient of the 2011 Architecture & Design Award.
Hopkins’ Senior Partner Mike Taylor led the design for the project, and is thrilled with the reception. “We are delighted to accept this award on behalf of the whole design team in recognition of the 2012 Velodrome,” said Mike. “Everyone involved is immensely proud of the completed building and it is especially gratifying that it is starting to receive awards like TheStadiumBusiness Award.”
