Winners in focus: David Campbell

TheStadiumBusiness Awards’ Outstanding Achievement Award recognises “an individual whom has shown outstanding commitment, service and leadership to the industry over a sustained period of time”. In 2011, our worthy recipient was David Campbell.
Currently COO of Formula One Management, David was awarded the accolade for his distinguished time as President/CEO of AEG Europe – where he not only led the spectacular transformation of the much-maligned Millennium Dome into The O2 in London, but also (in the words of TheStadiumBusiness Awards Judging Panel) “sounded a ‘wake-up’ call to the world’s sports and entertainment sector.”
Recruited by AEG to manage the £600m redevelopment of London’s least-loved site, in 2007 Campbell delivered a world-class entertainment venue; since honoured with a plethora of industry accolades, including being named as the world’s most popular music venue in the world for four years running (with its total ticket sales of 1.7million in 2010 surpassing those of second-placed Madison Square Garden by 50%!).
However, in addition to the venue’s widely reported ‘tangible’ successes, Campbell’s enduring legacy will be the venue’s relentless, bar-raising focus on customer service, integrated branding, sponsor partnerships, and fantastic content… which continues to pressure every stadium and arena operator to re-consider their own customer experience.
After collecting the Award at the 2011 Gala Awards evening in Barcelona (pictured), David commented: “I am tremendously honoured to be the first recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award… and it makes it even more special, as a Chelsea supporter, to finally win something at the Camp Nou!
“Joking aside, it truly means a lot when it is voted for by your own peers, colleagues and fellow professionals – so thanks to the judging panel for this humbling accolade.”
