Winners in focus: Cardiff City Football Club

TheStadiumBusiness Awards’ Customer Experience Award recognises “a stadium, arena or major sports venue that has delivered consistently outstanding levels of customer service”. In 2011, our outstanding Award winner was Cardiff City Football Club.

Commended by our judges as ‘a model for other clubs to follow’, Cardiff City FC has implemented a number of measures to enhance the matchday experience for fans attending fixtures at the Cardiff City Stadium, with a particular emphasis on families. Informed by extensive research and focus-group consultations, the club has introduced a number of key incentives and activities designed to appeal to families of all ages; turning the Family Stand into ‘a hive of activity’ on a matchday.

By supplementing the on-field entertainment with a variety of children’s entertainment, including face painters, clowns, dancers, and even a full-scale fun fare, and by consistently promoting a safe, fun and family-friendly image, the club has boosted attendances with over 6,000 season tickets now sold for the stand. The Family Stand has also become a tremendous commercial asset for the club, attracting major commercial partners and helping to engaging the local business community.

The club’s Head of Ticketing and Customer Services, Julian Jenkins, discusses many of these initiatives in the following video (as originally presented at the 2011 edition of TheStadiumBusiness Summit):

For delivering real change at a stadium experience through a focus on the customer journey, Cardiff City FC was deemed to be a highly deserving recipient of TheStadiumBusiness Awards 2011 ‘Customer Experience Award’.

After collecting the Award at the 2011 Gala Evening at FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium, Julian spoke of his delight at the accolade: “This award is a tribute to all the hard work and dedication shown by everyone involved at Cardiff City Football Club. It is a very proud moment to be collecting the award at the home of the current European Champions Barcelona.

“We as a Club have to keep showing best practice both on and off the pitch,” continued Julian. “We have come a long way, but we will keep pushing the boundaries of excellence. Once again, a big thank you to everyone involved with the Club and the tremendous help and support from the best fans in football.”
