TheStadiumBusiness Awards’ New Venue Award recognises “a stadium, arena or major sports venue that opened to great success” between the turn of the year and close of entries. In 2011, our outstanding winner was Dublin’s Aviva Stadium…
Officially opened in May 2010, the Aviva Stadium is widely regarded within the industry as a reference site for modern sports venue construction. Completed on-time and under-budget (with a reported total cost of €410 million) the stadium is housed within a compact urban footprint; built over Ireland’s busiest railway with minimal disruption.
The home of Irish Rugby and the Republic of Ireland football teams, the 50,000-seat venue combines hosting of international football and rugby fixtures with an increasingly busy event calendar to sustain the business model; rated as a 5 star venue by UEFA, the Aviva hosted the 2011 Europa League Final in May 2011.
The stadium is also certifiably sustainable venue, and achieved the respected BS8901 certification within 11 months of opening. Embraced by the local community as a fantastic city and national asset, the AVIVA Stadium was deemed a worthy winner of the 2011 New Venue Award by our international judging panel.
Operations Director Bill Enright was on hand at the 2011 Gala Evening in Barcelona to collect the Award. And, on seeing Bill return home with the Award trophy, Stadium Director Martin Murphy spoke of his joy at the prize: “We are delighted that Aviva Stadium has been honoured by our peers in the stadium industry. The Stadium Business Award 2011 for New Venue is a significant accolade of which we are very proud.”
